In November 2023, we conducted a survey across Loiyangalani Ward in Kenya, focusing on the traditional African house structures. Our exploration revealed a fascinating array of architectural diversity, cultural significance, and sustainable practices embedded in the design of these dwellings.

The houses in Loiyangalani showcase a rich variety of architectural styles, shaped by the region's unique geography, climate, and cultural backgrounds. Many homes are constructed using local materials such as interwoven palm leaves, thatch, poles, and ropes — materials that are not only practical but deeply symbolic, reflecting the communities' close connection to their environment.

One of the most remarkable aspects of these houses is their cultural significance. Each structure tells a story about the community's values, social structures, and spiritual beliefs. These homes are more than just places to live — they are repositories of oral history, carrying with them the community's journey and identity through the generations.

Sustainability is also a key feature of these traditional house designs. The use of local, eco-friendly materials and building techniques that optimize natural resources like ventilation and lighting highlights a long-standing tradition of environmentally conscious living. We also observed traditional methods of water harvesting, waste disposal, and energy conservation.

However, these structures face challenges in the face of urbanization, climate change, and modernization. We recognize the urgent need to preserve these houses — not only for their architectural value but as integral elements of cultural heritage. Our survey emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainable elements from these traditional homes into modern architecture, creating a future where cultural heritage and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
